Leadership and Outreach Work
I have consistently worked to provide opportunities to traditionally under-represented groups in engineering to aid in overcoming systemic barriers to participation and advancement. These include:
For Engineering Educators
I served as a National Executive Committee Member for the Australasian Association for Engineering Education (AAEE) (2019-2021) running many events to increase networking and platform traditionally marginalized voices. I’ve also spoken about simple classroom strategies to be inclusive on the Open Classrooms Podcast (2019).
For Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Students
My major contribution is leading the development, design and delivery of the Australasian Association for Engineering Education (AAEE)’s HDR Symposium (2019-2022). This symposium provided an opportunity for near-peer feedback to HDR students on their work and an opportunity to network with peers and near-peers. In a discipline where students and their supervisors are often the only ones researching in engineering education at their institution, the symposium provided a vital tailed opportunity that doesn’t rely on the student or supervisor’s own social captial.
Additionally, I served on the RMIT University School of Engineering’s HDR Student Representative committee as the Mechanical and Manufacturing representative (2017-2019). Here, I worked with a colleague to remove passport requirements to gendered equity scholarships, brought cultural issues around hot-desking to the attention of leadership and was a panelist on the RMIT University School of Graduate Research Mid-Year Orientation Lunch (2019).
For University Students
I designed an evidence-based engagement workshop targeted to first year students to enhance understanding of what is encompassed by Monash University’s mechanical engineering degree program through play. I delivered this 2016-2017 and recruited others who continued to deliver it through to 2020. The scaffold was adapted to produce equivalent programs for aerospace and mechatronics engineering at Monash University.
I was also a mentor in the Engineers Without Boarders Monash University Chapter IDEAthon (2017, 2018) and a panelist on a Culture and Diversity Panel for a RMIT University Females in RMIT Engineering (FIRE) and RMIT University Engineers Australia Student Society (REASS) event (2021).
For High School Students
I have facilitated and co-facilitated a range of workshops to high school students:
Monash University Faculty of Engineering Outreach Program (2016-2017)
AstroStories at Scienceworks for the Australian Youth Aerospace Association (AYAA) and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) (2017)
Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Year 8 ChallENGe (2016)
Monash Chapter of Robogals (2016)
Monash Motorsport High School Workshops (2016)
and spoken at events in different capacities:
Future Finders Exhibition Women in Engineering Panel Chair (2016)
Females in Engineering at Monash (FEM) Industry Night Launch Keynote (2016)
Sisters in Science Outreach panel speaker (2016)
Monash University Faculty of Engineering Careers Series (Year 11 Inspiration Night, Careers Advisors Day, Students Night) (2016)
